MCC to launch the Young Entrepreneurs Academy

Hope /hōp/ A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.

By Kyle Morey, CEO of the Madison County Chamber

kyle moreyNot long ago General Motors left Anderson, Indiana and took with them approximately 20,000 jobs leaving behind a desolate and almost hopeless community struggling to survive. Where was the leadership? The sons and daughters of entrepreneurs and past GM employees who remained to pick up all the pieces, provide the necessary leadership, and move the community forward. Fast forward to today and through a partnership of education, public and private investment, Indiana’s second largest business incubator was born bringing hope to a community living in the past.

But, we are just getting started. It is time again to put our hope in the rising generation and cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurship and leadership in an attempt to diversify our economy and our future opportunity. At the beginning of 2012, community leaders came together to discuss the key issues of the day. Out of that discussion came about a consensus that our community needs to embrace, support and promote small business start-ups as well as look to our high school students and how best to support them.

Enter the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).

In a county boasting a population of 120,000 yet lacking even a Junior Achievement program, we feel Madison County is ripe for just such a curriculum designed to instruct those interested in developing the entrepreneurial spirit. Over 30 community partners and leaders came together before the holidays to participate in a teleconference call with YEA! They are excited. They are behind the Madison County Chamber in promoting and executing this godsend. We plan to conduct a silent auction on February 28th during our Annual Awards Gala to both promote and fund the launch of YEA!

It is our hope to give hope where hope is needed—both in our business community and future business community.

About YEA!

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking and exciting year long class that transforms middle and high school students into real, confident entrepreneurs. Throughout the class, students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of investors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully formed companies and social movements. Complete with dynamic guest speakers from the local business community and exciting behind-the-scenes trips to local companies, the fun, projects-based YEA! approach empowers students to take charge of their futures in a profound way.  YEA! is not only a wonderful tool to teach students about business, but also a great way to build confident leaders with values. An excellent instrument to unify the business and educational communities, YEA! continues to expand across the country to fulfill our mission of teaching more students how to make a job, not just take a job.
